It is essential for male sex determination by promoting the proliferation of pre-Sertoli cells. In collaboration with FGF-10 and SHH, FGF-9 contributes to the development of the lung mesenchymal space. Additionally, FGF-9 acts as a positive regulator of chondrocyte proliferation and osteogenesis during bone formation. Aberrant expression or loss of FGF-9 during skeletal development often leads to abnormal bone growth.
